NHL completes Return-to-Play plan – ESPN 98.1 FM
Watch all hockey fans: it’s almost time to hit the ice. The NHL and its players’ association have completed their plans to resume the season.
In terms of location, the hub cities are no longer at stake. Canada will host the rest of the 2020 season: Toronto and Edmonton, Alberta, are the two hub cities.
Return plans to play planned
Both the NHL and NHLPA agreed to the return-to-play protocols for training camp and the 24-team tournament. The two parties also extended the current collective labor agreement by four years. This helps the league to increase financial security during the COVID-19 shutdown.
Teams begin training camps in their individual cities on July 13. Provided the plans go well, teams will travel to hub cities on July 26. The games then start on August 1.
Each conference takes place in a different hub city: the Eastern Conference in Toronto and the Western Conference in Edmonton. Edmonton will also organize the Stanley Cup final, probably in early October.
Melrose discusses the return of NHL
On Monday, Barry Melrose of ESPN joined Steve Russell on Sports scene. In the interview, Melrose gave his insight into the return of hockey.
The 24-team postseason tournament begins with the qualifying round of five game series for the lower seeds in each conference. Melrose said that hockey players prefer the best-of-seven series and that a series of five games is a challenge.
Melrose also sees no benefits for a particular team. He alluded to the fact that players who were injured when the season was interrupted had time to recover. There is a level playing field in terms of health for every team.
“These are the healthiest playoff teams ever in NHL history,” said Melrose.
Finally, the protocols allowed players to log out for free for the rest of the season. However, this deadline has passed.
“I think if a hockey player didn’t play, he would have played a while ago,” said Melrose. “I will be very surprised if the players don’t come out in large numbers and the vast majority of players play for the Stanley Cup this season.”
