Parents of college football take note of Ivy League suspending fall sports amid a pandemic

It’s been almost six weeks since Chris and Mya Hinton invaded the growing group of college football lawyers. Driven by schools that decided to return athletes to the campuses during the pandemic, the Hintons, who currently play sons in Michigan and Stanford, College Football Parents 247. The group now has 1,400 members.

Hinton, speaking in an interview to the larger population of parents on Wednesday, said they have not been rooted for a season. That was never the point. Their goals are for parents to sit next to the schools and the NCAA to answer their questions about how to do it safely.

However, they felt much worse about that July 1 prospect than June 1, with positive numbers of cases and hospital admissions skyrocketing across the country. And Wednesday, when the Ivy League announced she would not be exercising before January 1, the parents became troubled about what was being asked of their sons, a boiling point.

I don’t know all the financial data from an Ivy League football team, but I don’t think they bring in the money, said Hinton, a former first-round NFL pick and a seven-time offensive Pro Bowl fight. So if you’re taking money out of the equation, it’s a good idea. You get the Ivy decision. If the Power Five didn’t make billions of dollars, they would have knocked it out too.

On Wednesday, Ohio State and North Carolina became the newest schools to drop voluntary training due to the alarming number of positive test results. In a statement, Ohio state said the infected athletes isolate themselves for 14 days and are monitored daily by the school’s medical staff.

The health and safety of our student athletes is always our top priority, the release is over.

The Ivy Leagues’ decision to cancel the post-season basketball tournament in March caused a knock-on effect that led to the cancellation of all conference tournaments and the NCAA tournament. And his courageous conscience can once again influence his Division I colleagues. But so far, all that the big schools were willing to do in light of actual mini-outbreaks within their programs has been to admit to taking a short break before moving further into the unknown.

Wisconsin, without identifying the athletes by sport, announced seven positive cases on Wednesday, but did not end the workouts.

You have the cheated car and then you have the car that is just the standard factory model, that’s what the Ivy is, it’s the pure form, Hinton said. They are not driven by money. They are driven by what is best for the student athletes. And so, to see that they make that decision, I think it could potentially expose the other conferences going on about that security is not the number 1 priority.

The Hintons love college football. The sport was a big part of who they were as a family long before Chris and Myles ended up in Michigan and Stanford respectively. Chris Sr. and Mya met in Northwestern, where he played soccer and played basketball. By raising their sons in the Atlanta suburb of Norcross, they built their friendships around college football, and each parent had their loyalty that colored Saturday’s social obligations.

College Football Parents 247 members are the last to want a fall without matches.

Just the idea that their son will stop playing football for the first time in 10 or 11 years in the fall [hurts], Hinton said. Everyone wants it.

But they have to think about what’s good for their sons, because they’re not sure if anyone else is there, at least among those in power.

On Tuesday evening, College Football Parents 247 published a list of 22 questions for athletic directors about the treatment of the coronavirus. Among them: Will conferences enforce uniform requirements for all schools as the NCAA refuses to do so? What is the reporting of positive cases and are parents informed? If local hospitals can function, where does an athlete go for hospital care? Will the university offer short and long term insurance?

The Hintons published a letter to athletic directors, college presidents, and the NCAA in early June expressing their hopes to establish a Parent Advisory Committee similar to the NCAA’s Athletic Advisory Group.

Why can the NCAA find a size 7 when it comes to transfer rules, name image and similarity or suitability requirements that can fit any school comfortably, but is extensive safety guidelines for Covid-19 delegated to the individual schools? the letter asks.

In the case of his sons, Chris Hinton said he was happy with how Michigan and Stanford handled their return to campus. Yet both schools made national headlines about the pandemic on Wednesday.

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh had taken a quote out of context on social media at a conference with reporters that made him look like he wanted a fall season because he accepted that Covid is part of our society. His bigger point was that if students are allowed to be on campus, he relies on the protocols they have established and welcomes that responsibility to help protect the players as a parent of a daughter of the university itself.

Later in the day, Stanford announced that it would end supporting 11 varsity sports by the end of the 2020-21 school year due to the financial ramifications of the pandemic.

Every day, Hinton said, is something new.

Next Monday is the day the NCAA has set schools to take the next step in training, removing some of the precautions taken during the voluntary portion.

Were losing sleep over the idea of Monday coming, Hinton said, the idea that the storm was now bumping in instead of running away from it.
