Former Michigan football running back and coach finds a new head coaching job

Former Michigan football legend Tyrone Wheatley has found a new home to coach the game he loves.

On Thursday morning, Wayne State University announced it had hired Wheatley as the school’s 20th head coach in the program’s history.

The former Wolverine running back coached the Denver Broncos running back group in the NFL last season. He returned to the NFL after a three-year stint as head coach at Morgan State where he went 5-18.

During the interview process, (interim athletic director Erika) Ms. Wallace showed that Wayne State was well prepared and very detailed in what they wanted in the football program and the direction of the athletic department, Wheatley said in a released statement. This made me very excited about the job. I look forward to coming home, as they always say, there’s no place like home. Wherever I’ve been, I’ve always tried to recruit the State of Michigan and the City of Detroit. I am happy, honored and blessed to be back home and coaching at Wayne State University.

Wheatley has coaching experience with Ohio Northern, Eastern Michigan, Syracuse, Buffalo Bills, Michigan (for two years) and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Now 51 years old, Wheatley played at Michigan from 1991-1994. He was a three-time All-Big Ten award winner and was the 1992 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.

Wheatley had a 10-year NFL career after being selected in the first round by the New York Giants in 1995. He played four years with the Giants and six years with the Oakland Raiders.
