Downtown ice rink becomes popular venue for lunchtime hockey – InForum
FARGO The Broadway Square rink in downtown Fargo has now become an afternoon hot spot for pond hockey enthusiasts. Twice a week during the lunch break the skates are tightened in the heating house. A winter experiment that got off the ground.
Groups play 3-on-3 and without nets in an effort to keep the game low-key.
“It’s all about having fun,” says Noah Harvey, playing for Craftwell Architecture and Construction. “It’s kind of like the old-fashioned pond hockey growing up, so it’s fantastic.”
On Thursday, January 26, the first match was held between Absolute Insurance and Craftwell Architecture. People who want to get away from the phones and desk for an hour to play a game in downtown Fargo.
“It’s a great way to break up the day, break up the week. It’s been a long winter and we all love hockey, and what could be better than downtown? It’s great,” said Adam Larson, playing for Absolute Insurance.
The players attract their own spectators, and that is really a sight to behold. In the heart of Broadway, tucked away from the traffic and bustle of downtown, is a pick-up game. People who take advantage of our winter, instead of wishing it away.
“It’s just the setting, I mean it’s the vibe downtown, and we’ve got all these big beautiful buildings around you, and it’s just a great bunch of guys to play with,” said Aaron Hovland, playing for Craftwell.
There are a few rules. The size of the rink is smaller and players cannot lift the puck.
“It’s a fun thing to do, especially in the months of the year in Fargo where it’s hard to do anything outside, so it’s a great opportunity to get out there and do something different,” said Mike Dawson, who plays for Craftwell.
After the first game, RDO Equipment took on Kilbourne Group.
At the moment, eight teams play on Thursdays and Fridays during the lunch break. It has become so successful that the Kilbourne Group hope to have teams playing five days a week next winter.
