Penn State Football signed another top 15 recruiting class December.
Penn State Football has recently become famous for its elite tight play, and is expected to continue to do so for years to come.
The Nittany Lions signed two tight ends in the 2023 cycle. They were Joey Schlaffer and Andrew Rappleyea.
Schlaffer is from Pennsylvania and was seen as a Penn State lock during his recruitment. Listed at 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds, Schlaffer has been a star for Exeter Township High School in recent years.
The story was a little different for Rappleyea, who is from Massachusetts. He was originally committed to Michigan, but switched his commitment to the Nittany Lions in April 2022. The Nittany Lions used Massachusetts native Pat Freiermuth as a huge selling point with Rappleyea.
Both tight ends signed with the rest of Penn State’s 2023 class in December.
As the 2023 cycle begins to wind down, recruiting services have begun releasing their final rankings for players in the 2023 class.
Both of Penn State’s tight end signers were in the top ten tight end rankings for On3. Rappleyea is ranked #2 on tight ends, while Schlaffer is ranked ninth.
It shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to see the Nittany Lions sign two 4-star tight ends in a recruiting class. Since the emergence of Mike Gesicki during the 2016 season, Penn State has become a destination school for high-level recruits.
Since the 2016 season, Penn State Football has signed seven 4-star tight ends.
In total, the Nittany Lions signed 22 recruits during the early signing period of the 2023 recruiting cycle. The class is currently ranked No. 14 in the national rankings. As the cycle comes to a close, Penn State tries to finish on a high note by landing a four-star offensive tackle Chimdy Onoh, who is the main remaining target.
