‘India can never be a weak team…..They should play cricket fearlessly’: Sourav Ganguly
Former India captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has stated that despite not having an ICC title since their Champions Trophy win in 2013, ‘India can never be a weak team’.
“A country with this much talent can never be a weak team. Half of the players don’t even get a chance. I would like Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma and the selectors to stay with the same team until the World Cup,” Ganguly told Sports Tak .
He added: “If they reach the World Cup, they have to play without baggage. They have to play cricket fearlessly, it doesn’t matter if they win the trophy or not.”
Since their last ICC trophy, India have played three finals and four semi-finals in various formats but failed to beat the opponent in crunch games.
Most recently, their 2022 T20 World Cup campaign ended with a 10-wicket defeat to England, who chased 169 in 16 overs.
Ganguly feels that when the ODI World Cup comes home later this year, the men in blue will need to find a way to break free from the external pressures of expectations and deliver.
The 50-year-old, who was replaced by Roger Binny as BCCI chief last year, is currently in talks with the Delhi Capitals franchise for a management position.
“It’s just one role out of the other and I’m looking forward to it. When I first joined forces with Delhi Capitals in 2019, the team has done quite well ever since. We will feel the emptiness of Rishabh Pant. He is a top Indian cricketer, but he is injured, there is not much we can do about that,” said Ganguly.
