Shockers Snag Eight Event wins on day two over Herm Wilson
WICHITA The Wichita State track and field team earned eight event victories on day two of the Herm Wilson Invitational.
Mary Romero highlighted the performance on Saturday, the seventh-fastest 1,000 meters in the school’s history and winning the event with a time of 2:57.28.
“Today was just a test to see what she could really do, and I was incredibly impressed with what she did today,” distance coach Kirk Hunter said. “I think she’s impressed everyone who knows her. To do what she did today was amazing, so she labeled herself a great contributor to this year’s distance program, and I’m really proud of her.”
Romero made the decision to move away from being a multi-event athlete and focus on the middle-distance events for her final collegiate season and now leads the team in both the 800 meters and 1,000 meters.
“With most people, I feel like I have time to get to know them as a runner to find out the best workout for them, but for her, I don’t have zero time,” said Hunter. “So I said, ‘We can’t screw this up. This is our only chance,’ and she just bought into everything every step of the way, and you can see her progressing and being very strong in practice.”
Also winning distance events, Bryce Merriman ran a personal best of 1:54.42 in the 800 meters and won by two seconds. Ababa Sullivan beat her PR from a week ago with a time of 9:52.94 to win the 3,000 meters.
The Shockers earned an event sweep in the high jump with Lot masters (1.75m/5’8.75″), Marisa Jensen (1.70m/5’7″) and Mattelyn Swartz (1.70m/5’7″) going 1-2-3 for the women and Brady Poles (2.10m/6’10.75″) and Weston Lewis (2.10m/6’10.75″) went 1-2 for the men, tying their season records for second place in the conference and 39e at the NCAA.
In the 60 meter hurdles Joseph Holthusen got the best of it Jaleel Montgomery as they have traded hurdle wins all indoor season. Holthusen, a 2020 All-American in the event, improved his season best to 8.00, and Montgomery was second in 8.36.
Ridge Estes achieved his second consecutive victory in the shot put by throwing for the second time over 16 meters (16.40m/53’9.75″), and the women’s 4×400 meter relay team of Sadie Millard, Mary Romero, Leah Jerkovic and Mrs. Liyah Anderson closed the race with a final win, with a time of 4:07.75.
The Shockers split up next weekend for the South Dakota Invitational and the Iowa State Classic on Saturday, February 4.
