Men’s tennis wins both matches in Doubleheader
CHAMPAIGN, sick. Illinois men’s tennis took two wins today after beating Butler and Illinois State on the first day of home opening weekend.
The Illini improves to a 4-2 record on the season.
“It was an exciting day for the boys,” said assistant coach Tim Kopinsky said. “For many of them it was their first double match at Atkins in front of our wonderful fans. We look forward to another strong test tomorrow.”
Butler, 4-0
The doubles got off to a shaky start for the Illini with Lucas Horve and Gabriel Guzauskas fall, 6-3.
Everything started to look up after that Hunter Heck and Kenta Miyoshi won their game 6-1. The point was caught with a Charles Ozolins and William Mroz won 6-4.
Alex Petrov was the first Illini to win and won 6-0, followed by 6-1 Nick Master won 6-0, 6-0. Mroz took the win with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
Illinois state, 6-1
Doubles started and ended in less than an hour with Ozolins and Hunter Heck take a 6-1 win, followed by Mroz and Kenta Miyoshi 6-0 win.
Mathis Debru kicked off the singles wins with a 6-0, 6-1 win, followed by Miyoshi taking the 6-0, 6-3 victory.
Meister ended his day off with a 6-0, 6-3 win Oliver Okonkwo taking a 7-5, 6-0 sweep.
Guzauskas was the ultimate win for the Illini, winning 6-3, 6-2. Mroz fought to the super tiebreaker after losing the first set 5-7, but winning the second set 7-5, but dropping the tiebreaker 6-10 to give Illinois State the lone point.
