Four ACC softball teams are ranked in the top 15 in the latest USA Today/NFCA poll. Florida State jumped to No. 3, Duke is No. 8, Clemson is No. 10, and Virginia Tech comes in at No. 21.
In the D1 Softball poll, Florida State is number 3 and Duke is number 9, followed by number 10 Clemson. Louisville’s second straight week in the poll has the charts at No. 24.
The ACC leads the country in saves (74) and home runs (670) and ranks in the top three in multiple categories in the NCAA:
– Hits – 4,797
– Double – 800
-RBI-3,016
– Running – 3,304
Multiple teams in the ACC lead the country in various statistical categories. Virginia Tech leads the NCAA in 90 home runs and averages 1.73 HR per game – the third best mark in the nation. Florida State leads the country in doubles (95) and is second in doubles per game (1.86), walks (209) and saves (13). Clemson owns the second best ERA (1.35) and fourth best fielding percentage (.982).
The Noles currently have the fourth-longest winning streak on the road with 11 straight wins.
Individually at the plate, Louisville’s Taylor Roby is tied for most home runs in the country with 21. She is tied for 12th most RBI at 54.
Clemsons Valerie Cagle and Dukes Ana Gold are tied for fifth most HR with 18. They are also tied for 15th most RBI at 53.
At the plate, Cagle has the ninth most wins in the NCAA with her 22-5 record and the 12th best ERA at 1.22. She is tied for fifth-most hits with 73. Cagle was announced as a Top 10 Finalist for the 2023 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year.
In 189.0 innings of work, Emma Lemley of Virginia Tech is third in strikeouts with 258. Kathryn Sandercock of Florida State has the fifth most saves in the nation with seven, while her teammate Makenna Reid has the fifth best ERA in the nation with 0 .93.
Pitts Yvonne Whaley averages 0.42 doubles per game to lead the NCAA.
Clemson’s John Rittman got his 900th career win last week with the Tigers’ 5-4 victory over Virginia Tech on Sunday.
Florida State (9th), Virginia Tech (15th), Duke (23rd) and Georgia Tech (34th) have faced one of the country’s 35 most difficult schedules by past win percentage. Eleven of the Noles opponents are ranked and FSU’s past opponents have compiled a record of 1505-879-8 (.631). Virginia Tech’s previous opponents are 1509-917-5 (.622), Duke’s opponents are now 1467-941-3 (.609), and GTs are 1422-984-2 (595).
Florida State was named the preseason favorite by the league’s 13 head coaches to win the 2023 ACC Softball title. The Seminoles were chosen to top the league for the second year in a row, following their 18th ACC Championship last season. FSU received 10 first place votes for a total of 140 points.
