Columbus Academy beats Bexley, advances to state in boys’ tennis
A 3-2 loss to Bexley in the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division II district finals a season ago proved to be the motivation for Columbus Academy this spring.
Academy avenged that loss by beating the host Lions 3-1 on Friday to advance to its second state tournament in three seasons. The Vikings also defeated Bexley 4-1 on April 11 en route to the MSL-Ohio Division title 6-0.
It’s a great tennis rivalry and we like coming here because we like the challenge, but it’s a very difficult place to play, said Academy coach Marc Wurtzman. They have great fan support. It’s a great environment to compete in.
Academy (16-2) will compete on May 28 in New Albany. Bexley finished his two game schedule at 14-8.
Division I:Olentangy Orange breaks through for first OTCA district title
Leading 2-1, Academy secured victory as freshman Connor Thornton senior defeated Drew Solar 6-3, 6-0 in the third singles. OTCA games end once a team wins three games.
Other winners for the Vikings included freshman Nason Lo 6-1, 6-0 in second singles and sophomore Rowen Lo and freshman Ian Chang 6-3, 6-4 in second doubles.
Bexley seniors Stefan Schiff and Austin Flamm won 6-3, 6-2 in the first doubles match.
Those were competitive jobs, said Bexley coach Will Gingery. I am proud of the way our boys competed. When we played during the season it was 4-1, so we knew we should probably try some different things. We empowered our kids to fight and play hard and they did that for us.
Both teams have advanced players for the OHSAA state tournament on May 25 and 26 at Ohio State. Lucas Xue will compete in singles and Nason and Rowen Lo will compete in doubles for Academy, while Sam Lessard and Schiff will compete in doubles for Bexley.
