Michigan football: Bo Schembechler’s son resigns days after being hired amid offensive social media posts

Just days after Glenn “Shemy” Schembechler – the son of legendary Wolverines coach Bo Schembechler – was hired by Michigan as assistant director of football recruiting, he resigned his position. The departure comes amid the discovery of a mass of offensive and racist social media content that his Twitter account liked.

The liked tweets, which are publicly available for viewing, have been compiled over a period of years. Apparently hundreds to thousands of those tweets were not accepted Friday night before the Twitter account was finally deactivated on Saturday.

“We are aware of some comments and likes on social media that have caused concern and pain for individuals in our community. Michigan Athletics is fully committed to being a place where our coaches, staff and student-athletes feel welcome and where we fully support the university and the athletic department’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion,” athletic director Warde Manuel and coach Jim Harbaugh said in a statement released Saturday.

Harbaugh’s affection for Bo Schembechler, his former coach and mentor, is well known. Shemy’s hiring was viewed with curiosity at first, seen by many as a move made only because of the personal connection between the families.

The younger Schembechler played for the Wolverines and began his career off the field with the program as a graduate assistant in 1993. However, for most of his post-playing, he worked in a scouting role at various NFL franchises, most recently the Las Vegas Raiders, parted ways with him in January.

Bo Schembechler coached Michigan for 21 seasons (1969-89), racking up 194 wins and 13 Big Ten titles. Named Big Ten Coach of the Year six times, he finished his career with a coaching record of 234-65-8 between his time at Michigan and his first job in 1963-68 at his alma mater in Miami, Ohio. Schembechler doubled as Michigan athletic director in the final years of his coaching tenure, holding that role from 1988-90 before being inducted into thecollege football Hall of Fame in 1993. He died in 2006 at the age of 77.

Michigan enters the 2023 season in search of its third consecutive Big Ten championship and College Football Playoff berth. The Wolverines have not won the Big Ten in three consecutive years since they captured five consecutive league titles from 1988-92, a streak that began under Schembechler and continued under former Wolverines coach Gary Moeller, who took over in 1990.
