Rohit Sharma and Cos’ kit at the World Test Championship final could feel like a step back in time as India’s Board of Control for Cricket wants to continue without any jersey sponsors.

Many of the players who started training in the UK are seen in training clothes with only new kit sponsors Adidas three stripes and the BCCI logo.

This is rare in today’s day and age when maximizing commercial slots is the order of the day. BCCI’s contract with Byjus for jersey sponsorship expired in March after the ed-tech major sought to terminate the deal that was due to run through November due to adverse market conditions.

BCCI officials were expected to issue tenders to invite interested parties to long-term cooperation, but did not proceed with the ad in the absence of a favorable response in offline conversations. Negotiations on a short-term cooperation were also on the table, but it was decided not to continue.

It would be only fitting for Indian cricket to deal with prestigious and long-standing partners rather than go for low-key deals, a BCCI official said.

In the previous deal, BCCI was undergoing a makeover 1.5 crore per ICC match and 4.6 crore per match for a bilateral international. While the importance of ICC events has grown over time, a few crores for a single match is just a drop in the ocean for the money-rich BCCI. It’s a hit they’re willing to take.

Their recent five-year contract with Adidas and the now busy ICC calendar with a white-ball world event every year gives the board hope that they will find the right partners in time for the World Cup in October-November in their own country.

That said, it would be a rare sight to see Indian cricketers playing in plain outfits.

The ICC only allows commercial slots on the leading and non-leading arms for the WTC Final Whites. During the IPL, leading franchises like Mumbai Indians are earning more than 100 crore in a season from all sponsorship slots.
