World number one Carlos Alcaraz crushed Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open on Sunday and move one step closer to a blockbuster showdown with Novak Djokovic.
Alcaraz sacked 42 winners and broke seven while making light work of Italy’s 17th seed Musetti, who had won their only previous meeting on clay last year.
The Spaniard, the reigning US Open champion, has won his last 11 Grand Slam matches and is through to the last eight at Roland Garros for the second year in a row.
I think I played such a great level, really high quality of the shots. I played a very complete game from the first to the last ball and I’m quite happy that I made it through this tough round,” said Alcaraz.
I try not to think about the number one (ranking), the pressure, winning the tournament. I try to put all those thoughts outside of my head and just try to play tennis, enjoy it and smile all the time.
The 20-year-old driver will compete in the next round against Stefanos Tsitsipas, the number two of 2021, or the Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner.
Alcaraz improved to 34-3 for the season and is one win away from a possible meeting with two-time French Open winner Djokovic in the semifinals.
