With TJ Moore whiff, what’s next for Gators?
Compared to last summer, there was a lot more positivity around Florida football and Billy Napier’s approach to recruiting leading up to this summer. The Gators already have a five-star QB and pretty much everyone who has committed is a highly regarded four-star.
But no team is perfect, and with the announcement that top target TJ Moore is going to commit to Clemson over Florida, it leaves the 2024 wide receiver class in an interesting place.
Florida Football: Want Moore
We’ve previously alluded to the net worth of four-star prospect TJ Moore. At the time, we said that while he’s not a burner, his ability to locate the ball and jump over defenders to win 50-50 balls was special.
The Gators appeared to be in good shape to land the Tampa native, but eventually the tide shifted to Clemson.
In the world of recruiting, missing one player will not in itself lead to a program. But after other misses like Chance Robinson and NiTareon Tuggle, the list of available WRs is starting to get small.
Obviously, all eyes will be on the ongoing effort to flip number one-rated WR Jeremiah Smith, and if Billy Napier and DJ Lagway pull it off, Moore’s scent will be forgotten.
Outside of Smith, Florida, only Izaiah Williams has been provisionally locked down and is in the running for four-star prospect Mario Craver and will have certified roaster Jerrae Hawkins on campus this weekend for his official visit.
As a reminder, last season Hawkins ran 10.37 seconds for the 100-meter dash, the 7th fastest time in all of Florida.
All eyes will be on his visit, and Florida football will have to land at least one of the two; otherwise the 2024 WR class will only be salvaged when Mr. Smith heads to Gainesville.
