Cecchini announces new sanctions to prevent fights in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League has introduced new penalties for fights, including automatic suspensions for instigators and “aggressors”.
Commissioner Mario Cecchini announced the changes on Friday, which were approved at the league’s membership meeting on March 6.
The new penalties include an automatic one-game suspension for any player identified as instigating a fight, an automatic minimum two-game suspension for any player identified as the “aggressor” and, in addition to match misconduct, an automatic suspension of one match. once a player has reached their second battle instead of their third.
The penalties also include a game misconduct penalty for any player involved in a fight.
A press release stated that the Commissioner’s Office is confident that the new rules will further discourage QMJHL players from participating in fights.
The members’ assembly also approved the addition of tablets to the penalty kicks to allow officials to view various sequences during the match.
New cameras will also be placed above both blue lines to provide better angles for faster decision making in offside situations.
