Hickey on Hockey: Crosby’s Early Exit Spotlights Dumb NHL Policy | Hockey | Sport

Sidney Crosby left training on Saturday and was not on the ice on Sunday.

We’d like to give you an update on the Pittsburgh Penguins superstar condition, but all we can do is speculate because the National Hockey League, in lockstep with the NHL Players Association, has imposed a total blackout on any news related to the health of the players.

Since the league set these rules, they were not allowed to comment, said Penguins coach Mike Sullivan when asked about Crosbys’ decision to go to practice on Saturday at 25 minutes.

I understand the reasoning behind the rule. The players are entitled to some level of privacy and may fear that there is a stigma attached to testing COVID-19 and suggestions that they have become infected for doing something stupid and not following the rules.

The league has provided some general updates on the number of positive tests, and two players, Torontos Auston Matthews and Edmontons Caleb Jones, have said they have tested positive and are practicing after dealing with the virus.

The main drawback of the rule is that it leads to speculation. If a player does not show up to practice, the team can only announce that he is not suitable to practice. There’s no way of knowing if he’s infected with the virus, treating a minor injury, or having surgery that will keep him out of the lineup for months.

The Crosby case illustrates the stupidity of the rule. We can assume that he did not suddenly decide in the middle of a practice that he was suffering from COVID-19. Somewhere along the line, we would learn that Crosby made some adjustments in practice and decided it was best to take some time off rather than risk exacerbating the injury.

Would it have hurt someone for Sullivan to use a little common sense and say that Crosby had adjusted something and it wasn’t serious?

The coronavirus has given the NHL an excuse to formalize an unofficial policy of concealing medical information. With a few exceptions, teams routinely release information with vague terms such as injuries to the upper body or lower body. Teams are generally afraid to use the word concussion, and the competition protocol for in-game concussion tests is a bull’s eye.

But maybe there is a bill on the horizon.

Sports Event Betting is a growing company in the United States, where currently 18 states allow sports betting and another five states are preparing to launch sports books. There are only three states that arent considering legalizing.

The NHL has entered the gambling industry in the hope that casual sports fans will invest more in hockey if they bet on games. Nevada’s William Hill Sports Books reported a 38 percent jump in betting on NHL games in the 2018-19 season, at least in part because of the arrival of the Vegas Golden Knights.

The NFL is popular because it is easy to bet on matches, and the league requires each team to provide accurate and current injury information. With the increased interest in the NHL, don’t be surprised if bookmakers and gamblers demand more transparency on things like injuries and starting goalkeepers.

Taking the bite out of the game:

Social distance is difficult in hockey, but since the NHL takes all necessary precautions to keep players safe, I hope Brad Marchand is reminded that licking opponents isn’t cool. And all players must heed Daniel Carcillos’ warning that men do not bite men. That comment came after he was reportedly bitten by Marc Savard in the 2010 playoffs.

There have been dozens of instances over the years when players have sunk their chompers into opponents. The Dracula wannabes include Hall of Famers Chris Chelios, Dave Manson, Matt Cooke, Andrew Shaw and Laval Rocket assistant coach Alex Burrows.

My favorite biting incident happened in the 1986 Stanley Cup final when the Canadians bit Claude Lemieux Calgarys Jim Peplinski. Peplinski, who needed a bandage and a tetanus shot, famously commented: I didn’t know they allowed cannibalism in the NHL.
