A Grip on Sports: If we can stay for the waves today, by the time basketball season hits we may be safely ashore

A GRIP ON SPORT • One thing that seems incredibly obvious (and a little bit ominous) about this coronavirus pandemic is that conditions change faster than people thought. A month ago, it looked like a certain college football was going to be played. Today it looks like a long shot. And college hoops? Well, luckily November is still a long way off.

•••••••

• I have to admit it. Although I spent many days on the beach as a boy and young man, I never had the courage to try a surfboard. Oh, I’ve watched “Endless Summer” and “Five Summer Stories” more than once, but that’s as close to surfing as this man. Body surfing is another story. And my experiences under the pressure of something caused by a hurricane thousands of miles away have helped in this strange spring and summer.

We have all tried to keep our heads above water as the waves of the pandemic threaten to engulf us daily. But no matter how hard we try to stay safe, every now and then we are pulled to the bottom. Not long ago it seemed as if we had sailed out far enough. We were able to choose how to get back to the coast.

Not anymore.

Now the waves are so big that they flood us all. Soccer, volleyball, soccer, sports that are part of our fall landscape struggle to keep their heads above water in the recent tsunami-like conditions (thank you very much Sun Belt). Around here, the wave we experienced in March was a wave compared to what’s happening now. And at that time, everything we could do outdoors disappeared.

Hopefully we have learned how to deal with the waves better. We have simpler, easier and less obtrusive guidelines at the end of July than we had four months ago. The hope is that we will all put on our virtual life jackets and float safely above the battle until the storm dies out. When that happens, there is still a chance that we can sit in our easy chairs and enjoy college football. Wouldn’t that be great?

(Professional sports are another animal, the great white sharks in this analogy. The leagues have enough resources and enough to build walls around their islands and keep the waves at bay. Colleges aren’t as well funded and have a way too much sites to protect.)

But who knows how long measures will last? If the past few months have shown us anything, they have shown that people in this nation have attention issues that can kill others. Say this wave peaks high enough to scare everyone but a few fools into following science and putting others first. When that happens, all other waves that follow have a chance to be small enough to be an inconvenience rather than destroy our daily way of life. As long as the focus remains on the price: get past the worst of this virus until a vaccine is available and sufficient group immunity has been achieved. Then we can enjoy basketball and all other winter sports.

Today it may be 90 degrees outside my house, but I focus on that. Today the water calms down enough that after the leaves drop and frost returns, we can put on our shades, Hawaiian shirt and slippers and paddle confidently to a gym on a cold winter night.

Or at least look at home as the players and coaches do when they are in front of us.

• If it’s a comfort, there are some sports to look forward to in the short term. Heck, today is a final round of a decent golf tournament on TV. And if you’re in the northwest, two MLS teams in the region will be at stake tonight.

Soon, baseball, basketball and hockey are on the program to decorate our televisions. That’s a long way from where we were a few months ago, when all we could watch was table tennis from a secret bunker in Finland. Or something.

WSU: Around the Pac-12 and college sports, when soccer isn’t played, it’s easy to blame. Especially since it is everywhere. … Colorado is set up to decline just like any team in the conference. … In basketball news, Alonzo Verge has decided to come back for another year State of Arizona.

EWU: Our run 20 for 20 continues this morning with Eastern Washington next on the charts. Ryan Collingwood’s list is topped by the only possible athlete: Cooper Kupp. For a school with such a deep quarterback tradition, it is fitting that the best FCS recipient of the past 20 years is number 1. The rest of the list is also fun to sort through, with arguments possible for many different places.

Hoopfest: The recent announcement of the edition of Spokane’s most diverse athletic event this year will not be played, did not bring different views. No. Everyone understands – but is sad anyway. That’s the gist of Ryan’s story after talking to a group of successful players.

Sailors: Before we get into what happened yesterday, this story about one of our neighbors – in the broader sense of community – is really worth reading. Christine Wren is one of the few women who tried to climb the referee ladder to the big ones. That was a long time ago, but women still find the ladder quite greased. … Marco Gonzales made his last intrasquad starts last night at T-Mobile. The following is the regular season of 60 games. … Mallex Smith used to be in the lineup yesterday and is also ready to watch the season begin. … with a week until the first game, there are still some timetable questions. … The future is still the main focus for the M’s.

Seahawks: The NFL is adamant. No matter what the players union believes, no matter how many problems are left, training camps open on time. … There is some elation among the Washington tribes when the nickname of the professional football team disappears in the other Washington.

Sirens: Win or go home. That’s the gist of tonight for Seattle. Tonight’s The Sounders game against Vancouver has quite high stakes. … Portland, in another group, has already secured a place in the knockout round.

• The summer heat has finally arrived. 90s temps should be normal. Thank goodness the backyard has a lot of shade – thanks, pop, for buying that maple 34 years ago – and the house has air conditioning. Yes, I know how lucky we are. I count my blessings every day and twice on warm Sundays. See you later …

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
