On another level: the 2010s Daily News All-Decade Field Hockey Team | Local sports

 


The Greater Newburyport area has been home to numerous talented hockey stars for the past decade. Dozens of locals enjoyed a great college career after finishing things in high school, including a handful that would earn big college awards and a few others that would lead their teams deep into the NCAA tournament. Here are the best of the last decade’s worth of local hockey.

First team

Cassaundra Davis, Newburyport, Forward, 2011: Among the most prolific goal scorers in Newburyport’s hockey history. Named All-CAL and Daily News co-MVP as a senior in 2010, league leader in scoring with a school record of 28 goals while leading Clippers to the CAL Championship. Awarded Best of 60 All-Star in 2010. Moved to Star 2 Saint Michaels College and immediately impressed as a freshman before finishing as a two-time First Team All-Northeast-10 selection and as Division 2 All-American as a senior in 2014 .

Haley Johnson, Newburyport, Midfield, 2011: Dominant midfielder earned CAL Division 1 MVP and Daily News co-MVP as a senior after helping Newburyport to the CAL title in 2010. An excellent defender constantly helped Clippers gain possession and earned team Defensive MVP awards. Subsequently named Boston Globe All-Scholastic and Best of 60 All-Star.

Shannon Beaton, Pentucket, Forward, 2012: The first four-year starter in the history of Pentucket hockey. Triple All-CAL and Triple Eagle-Stand All-Star. Led Pentucket scored three consecutive years and finished second in the league in scoring as a senior with 13 goals and 11 assists. Awarded Best of 60 All-Star after senior season. Continued to play Division 3 college hockey at Bates, became a three-year-old starter and the team leader scored as a senior in 2015.

Molly Rowe, Newburyport, Defense, 2012: Standout defender helped Newburyport to back-to-back CAL championships in 2010 and 2011. Appointed All-CAL as senior in 2011. Earned Newburyports Coaches Award as junior in 2010. Helped Seacoast United win pool at national championships during club season. Went to Division 2 college hockey at Bentley University, becoming three-year starter and team captain as a senior.

Paige Hefferan, Newburyport, Defense, 2013: Four-year-old was consistently one of the top players in CAL throughout high school. Dual All-CAL selection and CAL All-Star as sophomores. Earned CAL Kinney MVP and Best of 60 All-Star Awards as a senior in 2012. Helped Newburyport to back-to-back CAL titles in 2010 and 2011. Then went to Division 3 college hockey in Keene State, where he started as a four-year-old and helped her team to four consecutive Little East titles.

Amanda Schell, Amesbury, Forward, 2014: Four-year starter was a two-time All-CAL roster and was recognized as one of the top players of states as a senior in 2013. Awarded Best of 60 All-Star and Boston Globe All-Scholastic as Senior Captain. Led Amesbury in three runs. Went on to Division 3 college hockey at Ithaca College, became a four-year-old starter and a First Team All-Liberty League squad as a senior captain in 2017.

Molly Jannell, Georgetown, Keeper, 2016: Three-year starter ranked among the top goalkeepers of the CALs per year. Earned CAL Baker MVP and All-CAL awards in 2015 after graduating from CAL All-Star as a junior. 735 rescues achieved in three seasons, including 299 rescues and a .898 senior salvage rate. Continued to play Division 1 college hockey at LIU Brooklyn and Quinnipiac where he joined the inaugural team at LIU Brooklyns in 2016 before transferring to Quinnipiac in 2019.

Erin Savage, Triton, Keeper, 2017: Three-year-old starter took Cape Ann League by storm after earning a runway as a sophomore. Earned CAL Kinney MVP honors as a sophomore en route to three direct All-CAL selections. Two-time Daily News MVP, which earned honors as a sophomore and again as a senior. Triton led to three consecutive tournament appearances, including back-to-back trips to the Division 2 North semi-finals. He scored 0.42 goals against the average as a sophomore and 0.90 as a senior while allowing only 11 goals as a junior. Currently plays Division 1 college hockey at Northeastern University.

Gianna Conte, Triton, Forward, 2020: Elite talent immediately impressed Triton, finishing as a two-time Daily News MVP and a three-way All-CAL squad. Led area in scoring as a senior with 18 goals and 13 assists. Helped Triton in the state tournament for four consecutive years, including back-to-back trips to the Division 2 North semifinals as underclass. Plays Division 1 college hockey at UMass Lowell.

Meghan Bean, Pentucket, Forward, 2020: Brilliant playmaker is Pentucket’s top scorer in recent years. Three times All-CAL selection. Led Sachems with 21 goals and two assists last fall, helping Pentucket make a historic run to the Division 2 North semifinal. Dual Eagle Stand All-Star. Plays Division 2 college hockey at Stonehill College.

Second team

Kate McCauley, Newburyport, Midfield, 2013: Three-year varsity letter winner played a key role in leading Newburyport to back-to-back CAL titles in 2010 and 2011. Earned All-CAL awards as a senior in 2012 and CAL All-Star awards as a junior in 2011. Continued to play Division 2 college hockey at Merrimack College, becoming a three-year-old starter who helped Warriors as a junior to the Division 2 National Championship in 2015.

Tori Spofford, Pentucket, Midfield, 2013: Striking midfielder was among the top players of Pentuckets at the beginning of this decade. Earned All-CAL awards as a senior after graduating from CAL All-Star awards as a junior. Helped Sachems three state years at the state tournament. Continued to play Division 3 college hockey at Babson College, became a four-year-old starter, helping Beavers lead the Division 3 NCAA semi-finals as senior captain in 2016. Also earned Second Team All Conference honors as senior.

Emily Hirtle, Triton, Midfield, 2014: Two years captain was a staunch midfielder for Triton in the mid-decade. Earned All-CAL awards as a senior in 2013 after graduating from CAL All-Star as a junior. Helped Vikings return from the season with one win in 2012 to nearly qualify for the 2013 state tournament. Then went on to Division 3 college hockey at Endicott College, became a three-year-old starter and earned the honor of the Second Team All-Conference as senior in 2017

Abby Bashaw, Governors, Midfield, 2017: West Newbury resident helped Governors Academy to the ISL Championship as a junior in 2015 and then to the New England Prep B Championship as a senior in 2016. Dual All-ISL Honorable Mention selection. Team captain as a senior. Currently plays Division 3 college hockey at Bowdoin, where she started each of the first two seasons.

Meagan Bragole, Newburyport, Midfield, 2017: Four-year-old starter played as junior top player of Newburyports in the junior year. Two-time All-CAL selection was a two-year-old captain who led Clippers to the state tournament in three of the four seasons. Named Newburyports Team MVP twice. Went to study nursing with Quinnipiac.

Samantha Brown, Triton, Midfield, 2017: Decorated midfielder earned the MVP award from Daily News in successive seasons as an upperclassman. Dual All-CAL selection was also CAL All-Star as a sophomore. Earned CAL Kinney MVP honors as a junior in 2015. Eight goals and 16 assists as a senior. Led Triton to three consecutive tournament appearances, including back-to-back trips to Division 2 North semifinals. Division 3 currently plays college hockey at Endicott College after starting her career at Division 2 Bentley University.

JuliaCordeau, Triton, Forward, 2018: Prolific scorer broke out for monster senior season, scoring the team’s top 29 goals to help Triton reach the third semifinal of Division 2 North in 2018. Then earned CAL Kinney MVP, Daily News MVP and Best of 60 All- Star awards. Overcame shin stress syndrome, a painful condition similar to shin splints, to become one of the top players of the competitions. Earned Moynihan Lumber Student-Athlete of the Month award for November 2017. Currently studying Marketing at UMass Amhersts Isenberg School of Management.

Meghan Winn, Newburyport, Forward, 2019: Dual All-CAL selection. Earned CAL All-Star honors as a sophomore. Triple Daily News All-Star was one of the top scorers of Newburyports in high school. Tri-captain and team MVP as a senior in 2018. Currently plays Division 2 college hockey at Franklin Pierce, where she started every game as a freshman last fall.

Bridget Sheehan, Triton, Keeper, 2019: Two-year goalkeeper starter ranked among the best leagues in career. Twice All-CAL and twofold Daily News All-Star. Posted seven shutouts as a senior captain with 1.23 goals against the 2018 average. 18 saves made to upset CAL powerhouse Lynnfield. Helped Triton to reach rugby tournaments. Also a Daily News All-Decade selection in softball.

Jenny Lerner, Georgetown, Defense, 2020: Dominant defensive player established himself as one of the top players in Georgetown’s hockey history. The triple All-CAL roster earned CAL Baker MVP awards last fall, despite only playing for half of the season due to an injury. Rare attacking contribution from defensive role, scoring four goals and three assists in eight games as a senior defensive midfielder. Awarded best of 60 All-Star after season. Plays Division 3 college hockey in Washington and Lee.

Suitability for all decades

To be eligible for recognition for the entire decade, an athlete must have graduated in 2011 or later and played for a Greater Newburyport school in the 2010s for at least a year. Governors Academy athletes are eligible if they are from a local city. Selections are based on production, prices, later performance of colleges and professionals and input from past and current coaches.
