NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship Day One Recap
MOBILE, Ala. – [Bracket | Schedule] The first round of the 2024 NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship concluded Tuesday night at the Mobile Tennis Center, with all eight higher seeds advancing to the second round on Wednesday.
Six of the eight games resulted in 4-0 sweeps in the first round, while two games featured 4-3 finals.
Game notes and highlights
- (9) Loyola (La.) posted a 4-0 win for the first scores of the afternoon, eliminating (24) Ottawa (Kan.). The Wolf Pack will meet SCAD Savannah (Ga.) on Wednesday (8) after just their third victory in the history of the national women's tennis tournament.
- (11) LSU Alexandria (La.) followed shortly after with a 4-0 sweep of its own, eliminating host school (22) Mobile (Ala.) for the second time during the 2024 campaign. LSUA defeated Mobile by 7 -0 to start the season.
- The 12e-seeded Union (Ky.) Bulldogs sent (21) McPherson (Kan.) home with a 4-0 loss, relying on wins from the 1, 3 and 5 seeds in singles after clinching the doubles point. Union will face (5) Middle Georgia State in the runoff.
- (13) William Carey (Miss.) continued the shutout trend in the first four completed games, defeating (20) Oakland City (Ind.) 4-0 and advancing to a second round matchup with (4 ) Xavier (La.) on Wednesday.
- (10) Westcliff (California) also shutout 4-0 and defeated (23) Morningside (Iowa) to advance in the tournament. The win is just Westcliff's second in national tournament history, as the Warriors will play (7) Southeastern (Fla.) in the second round.
- The final shutout of the first round on Tuesday came from (15) Indiana Wesleyan as the Wildcats defeated (18) William Woods (Mon.) 4-0 to advance. IWU will face the 2NL-placed the Seahawks of Keizer in a second round on Wednesday afternoon.
- (16) St. Thomas (Fla.) held on for a 4-3 victory over (17) Northwestern Ohio, collecting the doubles point and winning over Nos. 1, 2 and 6 singles matches. St. Thomas faces a tough task when the Bobcats meet defending champion (1) Georgia Gwinnett (Ga.) in the second round on Wednesday.
- (14) Dillard (La.) closed out first-round action Tuesday night with a 4-3 victory over (19) Holy Cross (Ind.) and made history with the first national tournament victory in program history. The Bleu Devils will face (3) Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in round two with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
- All second-round matches on Wednesday will take place at the Mobile Tennis Center, scheduled for 1:00 PM CT.
