Oswegos Commemorated Jack Bobbett with a street hockey rink to his name | Family and relationships
OSWEGO Some things are too sad to put into words, but over time they can be beautiful to remember. That was never more true than Thursday night, July 30, when Mayor William Barlow dedicated a pristine, renovated ice hockey rink in Shapiro Park in memory of 11-year-old Jack Bobbett, a boy who loved hockey and was loved by everyone who knew him.
That night Barlow spoke to a large crowd of young and old gathered to honor Jack.
Today there is something to do that I think is entirely appropriate, Barlow started, and that is to dedicate this street hockey rink to Jack Bobbett. He was just a great boy. Oswegos a small community. There are few people you can actually tell their name to almost anyone, and everyone always has something good to say. Jack was one of those people where you’ve never heard anyone say anything negative about Jack. He was just the all-round American boy. He had a lot of friends, as we can see today. He had that warm smile. He made everyone feel good. He was the type of individual we need more of, not just in Oswego, but in this country and around the world now. His family should be extremely proud. He was a great boy and I am proud to be here today with his family and friends doing this to ensure that he lives in this community for many, many years to come.
Barlow then read the official proclamation calling this the Jack R. Bobbett Memorial Street Hockey Rink and presented it to Jack’s parents.
Jack’s mother, Maureen Bobbett, then said a few words of thanks and memory.
Jack’s legacy will always be his kindness and compassion for others, she said. He was a friend to everyone and let everyone he met know better by knowing him. Hockey was his true passion in life. It was not just about being on the ice, but more about the friendships and memories he made along the way. His hockey friends really became his hockey family. I’m definitely in our minds tonight and would love it if the ice rink was dedicated in his honor. Seeing the kids gather with their friends to enjoy a sport that Jack loved will keep his memory alive for years to come. We love you, JB, and we miss you so much. Thanks again.
Moments later, after the ceremony, cutting the ribbon and the photos, she remembered more of the past and talked about the present.
He always came here, walked here, after school from Kingsford with his friends, Maureen said of her son. They were the big sixth graders and they would all hang out together. And Ray (Ryan, Jack’s dad) used to say, I wish they renovated this street hockey pitch. And they did.
It was a tough year, ups and downs, she continued, but the communities were absolutely great. They have done so many beautiful things in his memory, and we couldn’t be more grateful for that. It keeps his memory alive.
Jack was a notable youth hockey player on the Oswegos Minor Hockey Association program. A representative of that association expressed the good wishes of all its members in memory of Jack.
And so Jack’s memory will live on in a place he loved. Jack’s mom felt his ghost there that night, and I’m sure he smiled when some of his old friends went to the newly dedicated court to honor him to play a game he loved too.
