PANJIM: The much-awaited calendar season for table tennis tournaments begins on June 8 with the Panjim Gymkhanas Angleys Table Tennis Team Championship, organized in association with the Goa Table Tennis Association.
On the lines of the TTFI's elite Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) championship, this three-day event at Panjim Gymkhana will offer an exciting format of five matches per draw, including veteran doubles (40 and over), women's singles, men's singles, juniors ( U-19) boys' singles and mixed doubles.
Each team, consisting of five players, will compete against other teams from the group in a round-robin competition format, with the top four teams qualifying for the semi-finals. Relaunched after a hiatus of a few years, the Angleys Team Championship introduces the UTT format for the first time in Goa and promises an entertaining and competitive platform for players to hone their skills and build team spirit ahead of the ranking tournaments.
Tournament coordinator Ajit Ghantker highlighted the event's role in promoting camaraderie and providing valuable competitive practice for participants.
“The Goa Table Tennis Association has taken the initiative to revive the prestigious tournament that has lasted for decades, pitting top players from the outstations against each other. We want to bring back those golden days of table tennis and make it the most participatory sport in Goa, said Sudin Verenkar, president of the Goa Table Tennis Association.
