Carlos Alcaraz wins French Open for the third major title of his career, beating Alexander Zverev in the final
Carlos Alcaraz is the king of Roland Garros.
The 21-year-old Spaniard became the youngest man to win a major on all three tennis surfaces, claiming the French Open singles crown on Sunday (June 9). He defeated Olympic champion Alexander Zverev in five sets, 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2.
Alcaraz has roared to a perfect 3-0 in the major finals, adding to his victory in Paris on clay. US open triumph (hard court) in 2022 and Wimbledon (grass) last year.
Alcaraz joins the Spanish compatriot Rafael Nadal as the only man to win a Roland-Garros title under the age of 22 since 2000 (Nadal did so in 2005-2007).
The No. 4 seed Alcaraz didn't panic after dropping the third set and falling behind two sets to one. He raced through the fourth and then kept his momentum going, denying Zverev a chance at his first major in his second Grand Slam final (US Open 2020).
Alcaraz scored 56 winners in the match, which lasted four hours and 19 minutes Court Philippe Chatrier. The Olympic tennis event takes place at the Stade Roland-Garros Paris 2024and will start on July 27.
Alcaraz defeated Australian Open winner and future number 1 Jannik Sinner also in a five-set semifinal, after eliminating No. 9 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarter-finals. Alcaraz takes his head-to-head with Zverev to 5-5, including two-all in Grand Slam play.
It is Alcaraz's fourteenth singles title, and seventh on clay.
“The last month we had a lot of trouble with my injury,” Alcaraz said, pointing to the forearm problem that had hampered his clay season. “I didn't feel well, there were a lot of doubts. When I came here, I didn't train much. I'm grateful to have the team that I have.
He added: “When I was a kid, I came home from school and turned on the TV to watch this tournament. Now I am receiving the trophy.”
