Romo and Hunter head to Hayward Field to represent at the USATF U20 Championships
EUGENE, Ore For the second year in a row, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) track and field program will be represented at the 2024 USA Track & Field U20 Championships at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
FreshmenGael RomoAndHebrew hunterwill compete on Wednesday and Thursday respectively with a chance to make the national team for the 2024 U20 World Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru.
Romo, the RGV resident and former Weslaco East standout, will race in the first round of the men's 100-meter dash on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The final takes place at 7:43 PM. Hunter will compete in the men's triple jump on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Both Vaqueros aim to finish in the top six of their respective events to be eligible for selection to the U.S. National Team.
“It's huge to have student-athletes at the U20 Championships. It's a great experience for them and a real testament to what they can do in the future,” says head track/cross country coachShareese Hickssaid. “Last year we had a group qualifier and the majority of that group ended up making it to the NCAA West Preliminary this season, so this meet is a good indicator of what you are capable of and gives you a lot of confidence going into your second years and beyond.”
Romo and Hunter picked up valuable lessons from their older teammates who have experience at this meet. It is a large stage, where the competition takes place in an iconic location in the sport, often with some of the biggest stars in athletics in attendance. But they both feel ready after a year of learning and growing at UTRGV.
“This is really a big step up from high school. I'm literally going to compete with the best in the country at the U20. It's a big deal, and being there with Hebrew, being there with coaches who feel like family , it's something I don't take for granted. It's a business trip, but I feel like I'm doing what I love to do,” Romo said.
Hunter added: “I'm excited. There are a lot of people watching me, a lot of eyes on me, that's a confidence booster. When it's my turn to take the stage, I'm going to use all my energy, I'm going to enjoy all my attention at that moment.”
The Vaqueros have worked hard under tough conditions to prepare for this competition, pushing themselves to compete at a national level in the heat of the summer. Hicks knows they have what it takes to shine among the best.
“We make sure they understand that they belong and that they are very prepared,” Hicks said. “This meet really teaches you the professional side of athletics, so consistently standing up for yourself will be huge and the building block of what is to come.”
