Westborough Girls Tennis falls to Longmeadow in the semi-finals

SPRINGFIELD – The Westborough girls tennis team's motto this season was “Girls with Grit.”

And the players certainly embodied that feeling – until the end.

On June 11, the No. 3 Westborough Rangers traveled west to Springfield to compete in the MIAA Division 2 semifinals against No. 2 Longmeadow, who defeated the Rangers by the narrowest of margins earlier in the season. With a place in the Championship on the line, Westborough fought hard – and the team was tenacious indeed – but that was ultimately not enough as Rangers' season ended with a 4-1 defeat.

“I'm really proud. They've been fighting all season. I'm really proud of this game,” Westborough head coach Scott Henderson told the Community Advocate. “It hurts to lose, but if you're going to lose, I don't mind losing to Longmeadow. They played really hard and beat us. They deserve to go to the state finals, and I wish them the best of luck. My girls, they had a great season. I bet they wish they had made it to the state finals, but the state semifinals are a pretty big achievement. Other teams are currently at home and not playing tennis.”

Sahasra Kommineni and Elena Chen – Westborough's tough No. 1 doubles duo – were the only Rangers to emerge victorious from the semi-finals, beating their competition 6-4, 6-3. Marly Ducharme and Ellen Kennedy, Longmeadow's No. 2 doubles, defeated Westborough's Ella Glasgow and Nicole Nguyen.

All three singles matches were close at times, but Longmeadow ran away with each match. At No. 1 singles, Sarah Tiru defeated Westborough's Gina Hajiseyedjavady (6-3, 2-6, 6-2); at No. 2 singles, Sophie Dove eliminated Westborough's Diya Bhattacharya (7-6, 7-6); and at No. 3 singles, Bailey Downs beat Isabel Feldman (6-3, 7-6).
