The Little Rock coach is trying to inspire young people to play tennis
A Little Rock coach is hosting a 19th annual tennis camp in hopes of inspiring youth to play the sport and making it more accessible to everyone.
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. For the past 19 years, coach Kreth Simmons has hosted a youth tennis camp in southwest Little Rock, hoping to teach people that tennis can be for everyone.
“They just inspire me. I feel so youthful when I'm around them,” Simmons explained.
Members of Coach Simmons' family purchased the property at the Baseline Tennis Center years ago so they could set up the tennis camp.
Although Coach Simmons did not play tennis growing up, his children played tennis, including his daughter Emmory, who is also a coach at the camp. This school year she will play D1 tennis at Grambling State University in Louisiana.
“It means a lot to give back to the sport, especially for younger kids. I feel like a role model. So I feel like it's my job to give back and make them feel confident in this sport ” said Emmory Simmons.
This year the camp is offered free of charge. Children of different ages and skill levels all attended camp to learn valuable lessons from Coach Simmons that they can take with them on and off the field.
“He's more than a coach. He's like a father figure. I mean, I've learned a lot from tennis and from living with him. It's just a lot. It's more than just tennis,” said Charlah Aldridge, a camp participant who also plays. tennis at Little Rock Central.
A goal of Coach Simmons is to make the sport accessible to everyone. In a state where basketball and football are the most popular, Simmons wants families to know that tennis is also an option.
“Many children and parents do not know that this is for them and their children. It is a varied sport and you learn valuable lessons while playing tennis,” said Simmons.
The youth tennis camp started on June 3 and runs until June 13.
