Penn Manor grads, named after the U.S. Olympic team in women's hockey

Brooke DeBeridine, left, and sister Emma DeBerdine, a Penn Manor graduate, have been named to the U.S. Olympic women's hockey team.

Penn Manor students and sisters Brooke and Emma DeBerdine have been named to the roster of 16 players who will compete for the United States in women's hockey at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris, USA Field Hockey announced Tuesday.

Manheim Central graduate Jillian Wolgemuth was also part of the team's pool of 28 players who qualified for the team, but suffered an injury during an FIH Hockey Pro League match earlier this month.

The loss of Jill Wolgemuth from our group is a great loss, U.S. head coach David Passmore said in a statement. She has worked diligently over the years and her attitude and leadership were important to the team's growth and India's Olympic qualification.

The DeBerdines are both midfielders who attended the University of Maryland.

Brooke, 25, made her 50th international appearance against Great Britain on June 6. She has been part of the national team since June 2021.

Emma, ​​​​22, has been part of the national team since July 2022. She played 44 international matches.

The entire centralized group of 28 athletes worked exceptionally hard this year and made the final selection difficult, Passmore said. While the results weren't what we wanted during the European leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League, we diligently went through video and performance analysis as we chose a group of athletes who we think can push for a place in the quarterfinals in Paris.

The 26-year-old Wolgemuth has been part of the national team since June 2021. She played 65 international matches.

The United States earned its Olympic berth in January during a last-chance qualifying tournament in Ranchi, India.

Team USA did not qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, which were ultimately held in 2021 due to the pandemic.

The Americans will start the tournament with twelve teams in Paris on July 27.

Including the DeBerdines, nine of the sixteen players on the roster attended high school in Pennsylvania.

The remaining state players are Sophia Gladieux (Oley Valley), Ashley Hoffman (Twin Valley), Karlie Kisha (Hamburg), Kelee Lepage (Twin Valley), Ashley Sessa (Episcopal Academy), Meredith Sholder (Emmaus) and Maddie Zimmer ( Hershey).

Two of the three alternates are also from Pennsylvania. They are Jenny Rizzo (Hershey) and Cassie Sumfest (Lewisburg).
