Columbus street hockey breaks participation record in fourth season
COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) – The Columbus Street Hockey season is now underway, just in time for fun summer activities. In the fourth season, the program will have its largest group ever.
78 children came to opening day on June 28 at the Frank Chester Recreation Center. Co-founder and coach Jack Rosenhammer said this is a big jump from 38 last season.
Columbus Street Hockey President Jeremy Delaney also helped launch the program with Rosenhammer, along with Vice President David Hartle. The trio started with free pop-up hockey lessons and eventually settled into the program at Frank Chester. The focus was on growing the sport while keeping it affordable for everyone.
Hockey is one of the most expensive sports out there, so we thought: how can we reduce costs? Street hockey, Delaney explained. What equipment do you need? A stick and a ball.
Children ages 5 to 16 are eligible to play regardless of skill level.
Most people think that hockey is a difficult sport to play, maybe the child is too young or too young or doesn't know the skills. Get involved with Columbus Street Hockey, Delaney said.
Speaking of involvement, Hartle just received the NHL Stick Tap Award for his community service and mentorship. His winnings include tickets to the Stanley Cup Finals and a $30,000 donation to an organization of his choice.
“I never expected the recognition, I never really wanted the recognition,” Hartle said. It's just one of those things; I'd rather the kids see it, and the kids benefit from it. The money that was given to us just goes back to this organization: buying new stuff for us, and trying to raise money for the street hockey rink.
The team hopes to build a new ice rink for Fountain City soon. While they will continue to play on the courts, they hope the community will come out to support and most importantly, have fun.
It's really fun and I'm making friends, said 6-year-old Donnie Kingery, who gave Opening Day a 10 out of 10.
9-year-old Mason Delaney and his 10-year-old brother Hunter also rated the day as a perfect score. They explained what they were working on during the scrimmage.
“We did passing drills and then we had a scrimmage,” Mason said.
“I learned how to hold the handle better,” Hunter said.
