The River Hawks commitment to academic achievement is showcased in the latest NCAA APR report
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. Despite an ever-evolving college athletics landscape, Division I student-athletes across the country are persistent in their efforts to achieve academic success and earn degrees. This is especially true at UMass Lowell, where eight programs met or exceeded the national four-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) average of 984, as announced by the NCAA last week. This list includes the River Hawk baseball, ice hockey, men's lacrosse, women's basketball, field hockey, women's lacrosse, women's track and field and women's cross country teams.
“Our coaches and staff consistently recruit student-athletes who strive to be competitive in the classroom, as well as on the playing field,” said Senior Associate Athletic Director Sandra Roecker. “We are proud of their strong academic performance, retention and engagement, especially in the emerging transfer portal and NIL climates. This is truly a reflection of how our university supports them as well.”
Each academic year, every Division I sports team across the country calculates its APR using a simple and consistent formula. Each semester, scholarship student-athletes can earn one point if they remain eligible, and one point if they remain in school or graduate. For schools that do not offer scholarships, recruited student-athletes will be tracked.
“The APR is a reflection of the hard work our student-athletes put in day in and day out, as well as the support of coaches and staff who help put them in the best position to be successful,” said Associate Athletic Director for Academics . and student-athlete services Alison Quandt Westgate. “This success is what it's all about.”
Of particular note, the UMass Lowell baseball team was recognized by the NCAA APR report for achieving a perfect four-year average (2019-2023) of 1.000.
Additionally, ice hockey, women's lacrosse and women's basketball each scored a perfect 1,000 for the 2022-2023 academic year.
The minimum academic APR standard for any Division I athletics program is 930, a standard that all UMass Lowell teams have exceeded. The Academic Performance Program has created an essential framework for academic excellence.
