MJ Daniels, Southern Miss football player, killed in shooting
South Mississippi defensive back Marcus “MJ” Daniels was shot and killed in Hattiesburg, Miss., Forrest County coroner confirmed to the Associated Press.
He was 21 years old.
“The University of Southern Mississippi and the Department of Athletics mourn the loss of MJ Daniels, whose life was lost Tuesday evening during an incident that occurred off campus,” the university said in a statement. “We extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time.”
Daniels transferred to Southern Miss before last season after spending two years at the University of Mississippi.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of MJ Daniels,” said Southern Miss head coach Will Hall wrote on X.
“His smile was infectious and lit up the room. Please keep MJ's loved ones and our Southern Miss family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Last season, Daniels totaled 28 tackles, 19 solos and nine assists, and three interceptions, tying the team-high.
