Five Mavericks named to CSC Academic All-District Team – Minnesota State University
MANKATO, Minn. – Five members of the Minnesota State baseball team have been named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team for their efforts on the field and in the classroom this season. They contain Aidan Byrne, Ryan Friedges, Mitch Gutknecht, Zach Stroh And Spencer Wright.
To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or major reserve with at least a 3.50 GPA. They must participate in at least 50% of the team's games or pitch at least 10 innings. Student-athletes must also complete at least one full year at his or her institution and be at least a sophomore academically and athletically. Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. The Academic All-America first-, second- and third-team honorees will be announced June 18.
Byrne (Eagan, Minn.) was named NSIC Outstanding Senior of the Year and All-NSIC Second Team, as well as All-NSIC Defensive Team for the Mavericks. Selected as a member of the All-NSIC Tournament Team, Byrne was one of two players to start all 57 games, including 52 starts at shortstop. He hit a team-high .394 (sixth in NSIC) with a .464 on base percentage (seventh in NSIC) and led the NSIC with 93 hits, including 18 doubles (third in NSIC), three triples and seven home runs. He also led the conference with 236 plate appearances. His grand slam against Wayne State College helped advance the Mavericks in an NSIC Tournament elimination game, likely securing the team's spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Friedges (Jordan, Minnesota) was named to the NSIC All-Tournament Team and appeared in 48 games with 45 starts for the Mavericks. He hit .312 with 48 hits (sixth), 14 doubles (third) and eight home runs (third). He also recorded 48 runs batted in (fifth) and 23 walks (fifth). He posted 15 multi-hit games and had a .988 fielding percentage with 319 putouts and four errors. He hit a grand slam against Augustana on May 10.
Gutknecht (Stillwater, Minn.) was an NSIC All-Tournament Team selection. He appeared in 18 games, including six starts on the mound for the Mavericks, posting a 4-3 record and a 4.34 earned run average. He led the team with 74 strikeouts while walking just 19. Gutknecht earned the start in game one of the NCAA Central Region Tournament at No. 2 Central Missouri and pitched 5.1 innings, striking out seven. He also struck out a season-high 14 batters in the NSIC tournament against UMary, going a complete game of 9.0 innings, the only one recorded by a Maverick pitcher this spring.
Stroh (Elk River, Minn.) was named All-NSIC Second Team after starting 53 games and hitting .347. The redshirt junior had 68 hits (third), including 12 doubles (fourth), one triple and seven home runs (fourth). He also had 56 runs batted in (third) with 25 walks. Stroh finished the year with a .992 fielding percentage with 129 putouts and one outfield error.
Wright (Winona, Minn.) was a steady presence on the mound for the Mavericks. He made 16 appearances with 10 starts (team-high) and had a 4.04 earned run average and a 5–3 record. In 62.1 innings, he had 55 strikeouts (second) and 29 walks. On May 10, Wright threw a season-long 7.1 innings vs. Wayne State College and did not allow an earned run while striking out nine on the season.
