Simple cricket detail Americans can't understand: WTF is this?

Take it from an Australian married to an American: it's best to start a conversation with someone from the United States with the assumption that he has little to say about anything beyond his own borders.

Americans are among the best hosts in the world, but they are terrible travelers and often view the rest of the world and its interests, including sports, as beneath their own backyard.

So asking them to pick up the nuances of cricket while co-hosting the T20 World Cup was like asking them to vote for a president younger than Dennis Lillee. They would like that, but that won't happen anytime soon.

Case in point: Last year I watched all 30 days of Australia's harrowing Test tour of England while living in the United States, and frequently saw my father and brother-in-law running to the living room when they heard me react to the fall of the United States . a wicket.

They kept asking questions trying to understand why I was screaming so loudly and what was going on. Through the World Test Championship final against India and five memorable matches against the Poms, I thought we were getting somewhere.

But late in the Fifth Ashes Test, around Day 28, when we were watching together, one of them asked: oh, there are two batters at the same time? And we all decided not to continue their education.

No doubt many more cricket fans in the US are feeling this pain as the culmination of the shortest version of the game takes place in New York, Florida and Texas.

More Americans are asking more cricket questions than ever before, fueled by their own team's early success in games against Canada and Pakistan.

It reached a somewhat fever pitch when the US posted an undefeated record in their match against global powerhouse India this week and there was one basic detail that the Americans just couldn't understand.

What on earth is this scoring system, tweeted a frustrated viewer as India reached 2/33 after six overs in their chase of the American score of 8/110. What does this actually mean?

It led to a wave of reactions and many attempts to explain the situation.

It means it's over for you, one wrote, to which the original poster replied, but our numbers are greater?

When the match was over and India had taken seven wickets with ten balls to spare, another declared: I think we lost, but we still have no idea what this means. Did they win by 7 wickets? But where is a 7? I hope we become truly great at this sport, but chances are I'll never understand it.

Even some American sports journalists struggle to understand what is happening, or are forced to use descriptions that their audience will be able to understand.

Athletic baseball writer Grant Brisbee called a batter a paddle man in a recent piece, while the Washington Post reported how American star Saurabh Netravalkar had led his team to a historic victory against Pakistan in extra time.

So perhaps cricket has as much of a chance of winning this battle as the NRL does of getting locals to understand the difference between league and union.

At least cricket still has some clarity to capture the attention of the American sports public as a one-sided NBA Finals heads towards a sweep in Boston and the football season is still months away.

And hopefully their first real taste of the game will end the way it has for most cricket fans over the years as they watched an Australian team lift the trophy.
