It started with a camp in Kentucky on June 3, when he left Lexington with a scholarship offer. The same scenario then unfolded before a brief break at Indiana, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Oklahoma.
The Mundelein (IL) Carmel Catholic signal caller returned to the camp circuit in Iowa on Thursday. The Hawkeyes continued Taylor's attempt to prove it, extending an offer after his performance for new offensive coordinator Tim Lester.
“What I loved about Iowa's camp was that I got to work closely with coach Lester and get a feel for his coaching style, which I absolutely love by the way,” Taylor told HN.
Under longtime head coach Kirk Ferentz, Iowa has failed to offer many quarterbacks after a year of high school. That shows how much the staff likes Taylor, and perhaps a new approach under Lester.
“They thought I delivered the ball really well,” Taylor said of the feedback he received Thursday. “They talked a lot about my footwork and how far along I am in that part of my game.”
Taylor (6-2, 180) is showing maturity throughout his football freshman highlight video. There is a pocket available that allows him to avoid pressure while keeping his eyes on the field. That ability is complemented by a strong arm and quick release.
He should be commended for playing hard on the camp circuit this summer after reporting offers from Michigan, Maryland, Miami (FL), Vanderbilt, Colorado and Illinois before it started. The more options the better for him as he navigates an involved recruiting process.
Taylor was grateful to experience Iowa Football on Thursday.
“I loved the staff and the players. They were all very involved and made me feel really comfortable there,” he said. 'I will definitely visit again, most likely a few times. If it works. I'm trying to come back this month. If it doesn't work out, I'll come back for a match visit.'
The sophomore is looking to learn more about the Hawkeyes.
“I need to go to campus and get a feel for the rest of the school. And I need to learn about the business program,” he said.
