Aruna conquers a place at the Paris Olympics
Nigerian Quadri Aruna has been confirmed by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) as one of the 86 players who will compete in the men's singles at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, according to the world rankings.
The 35-year-old is making his fourth appearance at the Olympics having previously represented Nigeria in 2012, 2016 and 2020, reaching the quarter-finals in 2016.
Aruna and Algeria's Lynda Loghraibi were confirmed by the ITTF on Friday for their place in next week's world rankings.
Qualification for the Nigerians based on ranking had been delayed by the points deduction he received in April, but he was on course to make the trip to Paris after winning his appeal against the ITTF.
With less than 50 days until the games, eight of this week's athletes have secured their participation based on the selection of continental quotas allocated by the world rankings, ITTF said in a statement from the African Table Tennis Federation.
The men's singles draw will welcome African powerhouse Quadri Aruna of Nigeria, alongside rising American talent Nicolas Burgos of Chile. Asia's Kirill Gerassimenko from Kazakhstan and European Alvaro Robles from Spain, who previously qualified in mixed doubles, also confirm their places.
The women's singles match showcases a similar level of global talent. Lynda Loghraibi from Algeria (Africa), Adriana Diaz from Puerto Rico (America), Singaporean Zhou Jingyi (Asia) and Yang Xiaoxin from Monaco (Europe) can now officially start their preparations for their Olympic dreams in Paris.
With only one more world rankings update planned before the final selection for Paris is confirmed, the qualification process reaches its penultimate stage as next week's world rankings will be crucial in determining the final participants for the highly anticipated Paris 2024 Games.
It is expected that 86 men and 86 women will compete in the singles events of the Olympic Games
ITTF has also appointed three Africans Akram Attia (Tunisia), Es-Sayed Elrawdy (Egypt) and Ronald Mugwanya (Uganda) as referees for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
