Gustavus Finishes Top-20 in Region, Fourth in MIAC in Learfield Directors Cup Division III Standings
CLEVELAND, Ohio The final standings for the 2023-2024 Learfield Directors' Cup in NCAA Division III were announced Tuesday, with Gustavus finishing 70th out of 322 qualifying institutions. Gustavus had seven teams compete in the NCAA postseason and scored 274.5 points in the Directors' Cup. Johns Hopkins won with 1117.5 points.
Women's hockey led the way, with Gustavus earning 60 points after ending the season in the NCAA quarterfinals. Men's football, volleyball and men's tennis each achieved 50 points with a finish in the second round of competition, while both basketball teams achieved 25 points to take 33rd place in the overall standings. Women's athletics added 14.5 to the total after finishing 57th at the indoor championships.
The Gusties finished fourth in the MIAC and No. 13 in the region (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska). Bethel led the way in the MIAC, accumulating a total of 389 points with eight teams competing in NCAA championships, including a third-place finish in men's outdoor track and field. St. Olaf was next with 297.5 points after winning the men's soccer national championship, while Carleton was 68th overall with 276 points thanks to a women's cross country national championship. Gustavus was the only school in the country to participate in the specific collection of seven postseason tournaments. Gustavus last finished in the top 10 in 2008-2009 with an eighth place. The highest result in school history is sixth place in 2002-2003.
A total of 18 sports are counted in the final rankings of the DIII, four of which must be men's and women's football and men's and women's basketball. The next highest (maximum 14) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used in the rankings. The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA championships. The Division III Director's Cup began during the 1995–96 academic year.
