The popularity of the sport of cricket is growing throughout New York
This is considered a 'religion' in itself by many fans.
“It was something I could watch with my dad since he came from India. I mean, growing up, I played everything: baseball, basketball, football, soccer, tennis. You know it. But cricket was something I could connecting with my father at a higher level,” said Ankur Singh, member of the Capital District Cricket Association.
The sport of cricket may still be relatively new in the United States, but the game dates back to the 13th century and has a lot of significance to South Asians.
Ankur says some of the people playing here today have been lifelong cricket enthusiasts. They share that the opportunity to play the sport has kept them close to their culture and their motherland.
“It's like a festival, you know? Yeah. Part of me still can't even believe it. India, Pakistan. It doesn't get any bigger than that,” Singh said.
On June 8, New Yorkers, as well as some of these players, were able to experience the ICC T 20 World Cup for the first time ever with a match between India and Pakistan at the popular Eisenhower Park on Long Island. The sold-out match saw 34,000 spectators in the stadium.

“A number of us started this local Capital District Association in 2015 and since then it has been a home to hundreds of Capital Region cricketers and youth,” said Ashok Adikoppula, member of the Capital District Cricket Association. .
