Cardinals win the West Virginia North-South Football Classic in historic overtime
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS) Some of West Virginia's top high school football players met on the field to compete in the historic North-South showdown between the Bears and Cardinals.
The action started when the Cardinals returned the Bears' kickoff, but it didn't take long for the Bears to regain possession. Fairmont Senior's Dylan Ours made some progress on the field before being knocked out of bounds.
North reached the red zone but was beaten by the Cardinals defense and regained possession on an incomplete pass when the Bears were on 4th and goal.
The Bears tested the Cardinals defense, but the score remained scoreless in the second quarter.
Midway through the second quarter, Hudson managed to avoid two tackles and make a tap to North Marion's Landon Frey. Malachi Stromile of Weir High School managed to move the ball past the 30-yard line with a quick run.
The Bears reached the 10-yard line after a slew of drives, the Cardinals committed a facemask foul that put the North inside the five-yard line, putting ours over the line to give the North a lead.
After a field goal conversion, South attempted to enter the field but were defeated by the clock as the game entered halftime.
At the half, the Bears led the Cardinals with nine first downs to the Souths, with 78 rushing yards and 41 passing yards. The Bears also led in possession and penalties.
The Cardinals tied the game with a huge 55-yard pass from Mingo Central's Chris Ross to Clay County's BJ Williams.
The South then took the lead after Scott's Matt Frye released Bluefield's RJ Hairston for a 67-yard touchdown, but The North quickly came back to straighten things up with a 50-yard pass from Hudson to Ours.
For only the third time in the history of the classics, the match then went into extra time. The South Cardinals went ahead 21-14, but the South Bears got a touchdown shortly after.
The Bears lined up but were unable to convert the two points against the Cardinals defense, which secured the South's title for the third time 21 to 20.
