NSC launches annual summer sports camps
Registration for the National Sports Councils (NSC) Summer Sports Camp opens on Monday 1 July and runs until Saturday 13 July. Registration will take place from 9am to 3pm at Blenheim House, My Lords Hill, St Michael.
The camp starts on Monday, July 15 and ends on Friday, August 23.
Tracey Leacock, camp director of the NSC summer camp, made the announcement recently at the launch of the National Sports Council 2024 summer camp.
Leacock also said the camps will be held at Deighton Griffith Secondary, St George Secondary, Frederick Smith Secondary, the NSC headquarters in Blenheim, the gym at the National Stadium, the Lumber Company grounds on Codrington Road, Aquatic Centre, Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Seaside Aquatics, Salmonds, St Lucy, Brownes Beach, Passage Road Pavilion and the Table Tennis Centre, Nursery Drive, St Michael.
NSC Sports Director Neil Murrell reflected on the history and importance of the summer camps, saying:
“This is the 38th edition of the National Sports Council Summer Camps. It has been one of our major highlight programs for the NSC over the years. These camps enable campers not only to learn new sports but also to consolidate their existing skills and, [more] The most important thing is that you build friendships through sports.
Murrell expressed his excitement about this year's program.
I am particularly pleased to be organizing this year's NSC Summer Camps, which will cover a range of sports. We have a range of disciplines including cricket, football, hockey, badminton and more. What excites me most is the inclusion of a relatively new sport, Ninja Warriors, for a second year, giving all campers the opportunity to participate, leading up to the Ninja Warriors competition on August 3, he announced.
The director emphasized that the camps would be accessible, stating:
The camp will be decentralized, allowing youth across Barbados to access these initiatives. Over the years we have seen individuals who started here reach the highest international levels in the sport, such as Akela Jones, Jonathan Jones, Jason Holder, Sada Williams and Roston Chase. This camp is the perfect opportunity for young people to realize their dreams of excelling in their chosen disciplines.
He also touched on the need for physical activity, especially in a post-COVID era.
It is essential that our young people participate in physical activity and sport for their overall development. Physical inactivity has increased, leading to obesity in children. The summer camp provides a framework to increase physical activity and inspire youth for a healthier future, he said.
Murrell emphasized the camps' holistic approach, stating that they will offer exciting cultural tours, which will ensure a well-rounded summer camp experience.
He also thanked the coaches, coaching assistants and sponsors for making the camp valuable and useful.
