Teams retain Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra ahead of UTT 2024 |
Sharath Kamal will continue to play for Chennai Lions, who finished second last season. On the other hand, Manika Batra has been retained by Bengaluru Smashers.
Defending champions Goa Challengers have retained Harmeet Desai, a key player in their previous success.In the meantime, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran remains at Dabang Delhi TTC.
U Mumba TT has also decided to extend its partnership with promising young player Manav Thakkar for another season.
This year, for the first time, the tournament will consist of eight teams, an expansion from the previous format of six teams. The new teams are Ahmedabad SG Pipers and Jaipur Patriots.
As per the tournament rules, the six existing teams could retain one Indian player. Puneri Paltan TT has chosen not to retain any players.
Newcomers Jaipur and Ahmedabad will select players of their choice in the first round of the player draft. Notably, this round only has three choices.
All eight teams have already selected both a foreign and an Indian coach from the coaching draft. They will now field a squad of six players, with four Indians and two foreigners (one male and one female).
With the addition of two new teams, the tournament format has changed. The eight teams are divided into two groups of four.
Each team plays five matches in the league phase, facing the three other teams in their group and two randomly selected teams from the other group.
The top two teams from each group advance to the semi-finals.
“Over the years, the franchises have not only looked at winning titles but have also focused on building the core of their team around their star player who can lead the team,” said UTT promoters Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani in a joint statement.
“The same thought process is evident when it comes to retaining players UTT 2024 while we see the five franchises holding on to their star players for another season.”
