Tipton Middle School teacher and football coach killed in car crash
TIPTON COUNTY Members of the Tipton Middle School community are mourning the loss of a beloved English teacher and football coach after they say he was killed in an accident Saturday morning.
Officers with the Tipton County Sheriff's Office responded just after 8:30 a.m. to reports of a single vehicle crash in the area around 2700 E. State Road 28.
Upon arrival, officers found a car that had crashed into a creek. First responders entered the creek and attempted to provide medical aid to the driver, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to a preliminary investigation, 40-year-old Philip Kyle Degler of Elwood was driving his 2016 Kia Soul westbound on SR 28. For an unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway as it entered a curve.
Police say the vehicle drove northwest through a small corn field before coming to rest in the creek.
The events leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
Tipton Middle School says Degler was an English teacher and football coach at the school. They released the following statement:
It is with great sadness that we announce that Kyle Degler, a beloved English teacher and football coach at Tipton Middle School, has passed away from injuries sustained in a car accident earlier today. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and to all our students and staff who knew and worked with him. The supervisors will be present in the TMS Media Center next week from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Funeral arrangements are pending.
