Retired tennis coach from Lincoln calls his final season the best

After 50 years as the tennis coach at Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Bob Feller has hung up his whistle.

Feller joined Evan Smith and Ryan Brahm this week for an episode of the On the Line Podcast, where he explained that he was initially hired as a substitute for a psychology teacher on a one-year contract.

Not long after, the director came in and said, “I know you only have a one-year contract, but we're kind of stuck here. Can you help us, he remembered. So that one year contract turned into fifty, and I don't know how.

Feller finished his career at the state tournament with Aiden Knuth and Coen Neuberg, just one win away from the podium, with a record of 31 and 3.

Even though the rest of the team was quite inexperienced, Feller still had a great time this year.

What made this season remarkable is how much fun we had, he said. Keeping those kids awake, even if they come from the field. Oh no coach. But they persevered and we kept saying don't worry about the score. I want you to tell me how many times you got the ball over the net. I want you to tell me how your service was today.

Feller said he will enjoy his retirement, but he will miss being with the children.

Being with young people keeps you young, he said. They are all so very, very different. The big psychological challenge was to find out what was going on in their heads. You know, how do I approach this player?

Feller also said he plans to make his first fishing opener in years, and his wife will fill the time he would normally spend coaching in the spring.
