Korean golfers secure Olympic tickets amid open battle in the US

Korean golfers finished well out of contention at the US Open in North Carolina, with two of them all but clinching a spot in the Olympic tournament that starts in August.

Of the six Koreans who played in the US Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in Pinehurst, North Carolina, only three made the cut. Tom Kim was the best player of the trio, as he finished tied for 26th with six over 286.

Kim started the final round in ninth place, but dropped out of the top 10 after shooting a six-over 76 with three birdies, seven bogeys and one double bogey on Sunday (local time).

Kim Si-woo finished tied for 32nd with seven-over 287, while Kim Seong-hyeon finished in 56th with 12-over 292.

Kim Seong-hyeon had the best opening round among the Koreans on Thursday with a 69, but followed that with rounds of 72 and 83. He recovered on Sunday with a 68 to tie with four others for the second-best score of the last round.

Im Sung-jae, Kang Sung-hoon and An Byeong-hun all missed the cut.

The US Open was also the last chance for golfers to secure places in the men's tournament at the upcoming Paris Olympics. The 60-man field for the Olympic Games will be determined based on the world rankings after Sunday's final round.

A country can send a maximum of four golfers if they are all in the top 15, and a maximum of two players if they are outside the top 15.

After the top 15, the remaining spots go to the highest-ranked players from countries where at least two golfers have not yet qualified. In this scenario, each country can have a maximum of two players.
