Wolfpack got help from Hurricanes
Whether it's the Detroit Tigers' “Pizza Stick”, the Seattle Mariners' Trident or the Milwaukee Brewers' cheesehead, home run parties have become a standard in MLB baseball over the years.
So much so that they have taken over college baseball, as evidenced by the eight teams that made it to the 2024 College World Series. And NC State Baseball's home run celebration may be among the best in the field, including a Spider-Man meme from Kentucky and a fur coat for Tennessee.
Part of what makes the Wolfpack celebration so special: It involves a hockey helmet and stick from the state's premier NHL team, the Carolina Hurricanes.

Why is NC State having a hockey home run celebration?
If you're from Raleigh, North Carolina, you may not associate the state of North Carolina with a “hockey state.” The sport's history and popularity are more tied to the northeastern states and Canada, while the Tar Heel State is more closely aligned with basketball, with not only the Wolfpack, UNC and Duke in the college ranks, but also the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA.
But North Carolina does have an NHL team in the Carolina Hurricanes, the source of the Wolfpack's home run celebration. As noted by NC State baseball manager Elliott Avent in February:
“I was watching the (Detroit) Tigers game and (Canes season ticket member) Dan Cloos at Cloos' Coney Island is a big Red Wings guy. I saw their party is a hockey thing so I called (Hurricanes coach Rod Brind 'Amour) to see if we could get a hockey stick and helmet,'AventtoldNHL.com. “I think the boys like it. They just want something to have fun with.”
NC State's home run celebration has been used quite often this postseason, including Monday during the Wolfpack's College World Series elimination game against Florida at Charles Schwab Field Omana: Alec Makarewicz hit a two-run home run in the third inning to break Florida's lead reduce. 4-3.
Makarewicz, who also wears No. 99 in honor of legendary NHL player Wayne Gretzky, was welcomed with a Hurricanes helmet and stick when he returned to the dugout. And as you can see below from earlier this season, for every home run hit by a Wolfpack this season, that person puts on the helmet and attempts a slap shot in celebration.
