Youngster experiences a dream tennis trip to California
Penticton Tennis Club member Aron Pilbart loved his two-week tennis adventure in California
Aron Pilbart had the time of his life during a two-week tennis trip in California.
Pilbart, 10, joined Tennis BC when they went to Beverley Hills and San Diego for tournaments in the summer.
The Penticton Tennis Club member took advantage of the opportunity to be without his parents.
When he was offered to go to California, that was his only wish, he wanted to go alone, said Pilbart's mother Reka, who had no problem with her son being alone. He just hoped that another boy would leave without his parents. They shared a room.
How to be yourself without parents was really cool, said Aron, who never got homesick under the tutelage of Tennis BC coaches. It was nice to be alone.
“I just really liked the independence,” continued Aron, who earned his way to California by being one of the top three BC players for his age group. I enjoyed learning how to manage money. Do things yourself.
Aron found the weather and beaches were hotter compared to Penticton. The waves were also bigger.
On the field, Aron was exposed to new competition. At Beverley Hills he won the under-10 singles and U12 doubles with Conor Robertson of West Vancouver.
The competition wasn't as high, but it was still high, he said. I won it, so I was very happy.
At the Little Mo International, held in San Diego from July 2 to 7, Aron lost in the second round to the top seed and defending champion. Despite the losses, Aron said the tournament had strong players. One of the things he learned was not to give up his game and to be more consistent. He also learned by playing against international players from 16 countries.
The tournament was named Little Mo after Maureen Connolly, who won the tennis Grand Slam in 1953, the first woman to do so when she captured the Australian Championship, the French Championship, Wimbledon and the US Championship.
I'm just used to playing against all BC players, Aron said.
When I heard the news, I was very excited, said Aron, who likes Roger Federer for his playing style. It just feels good to be at the top.
Aron was selected for Tennis BC's provincial training program at the age of nine and dreams of playing on the Association of Tennis Professionals tour.
Aron was able to make the trip thanks to fundraising efforts from the Penticton Tennis Club, South Okanagan General Hospital in Oliver, special events, silent auctions, 50/50 drawing and a raffle of a Kate Kimberley painting. Of the $2,500 it cost him to go, $2,300 was raised. In a letter to the club with updates on Aron's journey, the Pilbarts thanked everyone for their support.
