Team of the Week – St. Johns Prep Tennis
Do you know what I was thinking? Most teams hit a few bumps on the road to greatness. That's not to say there haven't been challenges this spring, but things have been pretty much smooth sailing for the St. Johns Prep tennis team.
The top-seeded Eagles defeated No. 2 Concord-Carlisle in the Division 1 state championship on Saturday at MIT's duPont Athletic Center, completing a perfect 22-0 season.
Yes, 22 games, 22 wins behind coach Mark Metropolis, who also earned his 500th win with The Prep in April.
Not only did Concord-Carlisle stand in the way of the Eagles on Saturday, but so did the clock. The 4:30 PM match was postponed and didn't end until almost 9:00 PM. Psychologically speaking, that is not easy for the players.
But hours later, the program's fifth state title was secured, its first since 2001.
Luke Free, the doubles team of Mark McDuffee and Alex Melville, Jack Prokopis and the duo of Luke Prokopis and Boris Kouzminov all won.
Most determined team I've ever had, Metropolis said. When we lost 3-2 to Lexington in the semifinals last year, the kids said we would work harder and win, but you just think it's talking. It turned out that this was not the case. They set the goals and achieved them.
The Eagles finished 10-0 in the Catholic Conference, 5-0 in the state tournament, and can now live the rest of their lives as champions.
These kids played so well and were a determined bunch, Metropolis said.
