Two players at each position with the toughest schedule, using the strength of PFF's schedule

A rough start for two rookie quarterbacks in 2024: The Denver Broncos And New England Patriots have the toughest schedules of any team through the first 10 weeks of the season.

The Dallas Cowboys The already limited backfield will face an uphill battle: Heading into his age 29 season, Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys finish with the toughest schedule in the league.

Checking out The power of PFF's planning tool: PFF's Fantasy Strength of Schedule (SoS) metric provides a season-wide overview of opponent matchups for each fantasy position.

Estimated reading time: 6 minutes

Every year there are a handful of players who are considered elite and virtually opponent-proof, and then there's the rest of the league. Today we're here to focus on the latter and in particular those with a challenging schedule that could hinder their overall upside to fantasy managers.

Here's a look at two players at each position, rated with the most difficult schedule (SOS) through the first ten weeks of the 2024 NFL season, using PFF's power of planning tool.

Remark: SOS ratings rate each team's schedule by position with a rating of 0-10, with 0 being the most difficult schedule and 10 being the easiest.

Bo Nix, Denver Broncos

  • Strength of Schema (SOS) assessment.: 0.0/10

Starting quarterback Bo Nix has not been officially named starter for the Denver Broncos not yet, but things certainly seem to be heading in that direction. When he's inevitably named the starter, he'll have to come to terms with the fact that he's starting his NFL career with an absolutely brutal schedule that might just be enough to scare him back to the NCAA. Not only will Nix and company play six of their first ten games on the road, but they will also be playing against the formidable secondaries of the Jets from New York, Baltimore Ravens And Kansas City Chiefs (among other things).

Nix is surprisingly athletic and could be a viable long-term addition to the dynasty, but one look at his new scheme is enough to have managers restructuring in the opposite direction.

Drake Maye and Jacoby Brissett, New England Patriots

  • Strength of Schema (SOS) assessment.: 0.1/10

The New England Patriots quarterbacks room has the second-toughest schedule through the first 10 weeks of the season with a 0.1 rating. They will play a total of seven matches on the road during this period, including a match against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium (where they are technically the home team). For an offense already projected in the bottom tier of the league due to a lack of weapons in the passing game, their challenging schedule certainly doesn't help.

Honorable mentions: Brock Purdy (49ers), Kyler Murray (Arizona Cardinals)

Ezekiel Elliott, Dallas Cowboys

  • Strength of Schema (SOS) Assessment.: 0.0/10

The Dallas Cowboys I didn't invest much in the run game this offseason because I was missing out Texas expectation Jonathon Brooks in the draft and eventual re-signing veteran Ezekiel Elliott with not much else in the way of competition outside Rico Dowdle.

Elliott enters his age-29 season after a campaign in which he posted career lows with 3.5 yards per attempt, 69.2 rushing grade, 2.54 yards after contact per attempt and a 2.6 yards breakaway percentage. Combine his declining performance with offensive line shake-up and the absolutely brutal schedule ahead, and Elliott suddenly looks like one of the biggest red flags on the draft board, even if he could be in line for significant volume in one of the most prolific leagues. violations.

Bijan Robinson, Atlanta Falcons

  • Strength of Schema (SOS) assessment.: 0.6/10

The Atlanta Falcons got a major upgrade at quarterback this offseason, which is good news for the former No. 8 overall pick's scoring potential Sesame Robinson. However, he will have an uphill battle against the rushing defenses that await him. Robinson's scheme rating of 0.6/10 ranks third-lowest among running backs and is poised to face some formidable defensive lines, including the Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, Dallas Cowboys And Tampa Bay Buccaneers (among other things).

Honorable mentions: Javonte Williams (Denver Broncos), Devin Singletary (New York Giants), Naje Harris & Jaylen Warren (Pittsburgh Steelers)

Marvin Harrison Jr., Arizona Cardinals

  • Strength of Schema (SOS) assessment.: 0.0/10

Welcome to the NFL, Rook! That seems to be a common theme here, with much of the 2024 NFL Draft class on the list of toughest schedules. Marvin Harrison Jr. enters the NFL with an elite, NFL-ready skill set that puts him well ahead of most rookies, yet he'll still have his hands full in showdowns against the Jets from New York, San Francisco 49ers And Buffalo Bills Through the first three weeks of the season, three of the six teams achieved a coverage ratio of 90.0 or higher in 2023.

Tennessee Titans WRs

  • Strength of Schema (SOS) assessment.: 0.0/10

The Tennessee titans have upgraded their wide receiver room in a big way this season by signing veterans Calvin Ridley And Tyler Boyd, and they'll need all the help they can get from taking one look at the schedule. They will start the year with games against the Chicago Bears secondary, led by Jaylon Johnson whose coverage rating of 91.0 ranked second among all defenders last season, followed by a showdown against the Jets from New York three of Sauce Garner, DJ Reed And Michael Carter II.

Later there are games against the Bills, who ranked fourth in the league in 2023 with a coverage rating of 91.2, a game in the dead heat of Miami Gardens (where no one seems to be doing particularly well), and against the Detroit Lions.

Honorable mentions: Seattle Seahawks WRs, Minnesota Vikings WRs

David Njoku, Cleveland Browns

  • Strength of Schema (SOS) assessment.: 1.4/10

There may be no more difficult evaluation of the tight end position for 2024 than Cleveland Browns David Njoku. Although he finished the year red-hot at QB Joe Flacco under center he will have to deal with a ripe connection between starter Deshaun Watson and W.R Amari Kuiper now, as well as a tough schedule. The Browns strength-of-scheme rating of 1.4 is the third-lowest in the league (AKA, third-toughest).

Kyle Pitts, Atlanta Falcons

  • Strength of Schema (SOS) assessment.: 1.7/10

Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts I just got a major upgrade at quarterback with Kirk cousins, which should do wonders in terms of its achievable target. Last year, his 69.8% target percentage ranked 42nd out of 43 qualifying tight ends. The only thing we have to overcome this season is a challenging schedule that ranks fifth in the league. Expect Pitts to have his hands full as he faces some of the league's best linebackers this season after ranking dead last in separation percentage among tight ends the past two seasons.

Honorable mentions: Hunter Hendrik (New England Patriots), George Kittel (San Francisco 49ers)
