Wild junior tennis great Max Exsted practices with Rafael Nadal ahead of the Olympic Games
After winning the Australian Open junior doubles title earlier this year and touring the world as one of America's best junior tennis players, Max Exsted gets some time with tennis royalty this week.
Rafael Nadal is preparing for the Olympic Games in Paris, and Exsted is spending some time training at Nadal's academy in Mallorca, Spain. So the two had a practice session on Thursday and another one was scheduled for Friday.
“I actually played very well. I was very nervous on the first ball,” Exsted said in a voice message via What'sApp. “But I didn't swallow any of it.”
Exsted reached the second round in singles at the French Open and the quarterfinals in doubles with teammate Cooper Woestendick, but Exsted was unable to compete in the quarterfinals after a stomach illness eliminated him.
He is number 29 in the International Tennis Federation's junior rankings. He is number 11 in the world for his age group.
Nadal has struggled with injuries in recent years and recently lost in the first round of the French Open to Alexander Zverev, who reached the final. After the tournament, Nadal announced that he would not play at Wimbledon and would instead focus on playing for Spain in the Olympics.
Exsted said it was standard practice, apart from one of the two or three greatest players in history standing on the other side of the net.
“I didn't talk to Rafa much, but he told me bravo, Max, bravo, after an exercise,” Exsted said.
Once Nadal was on the court, Exsted got back to work with his coaches and worked on improving his own forehand.
