Row erupts over Jack Draper over British tennis star's multi-millionaire father | Tennis | Sport
Liam Broady has defended Jack Draper after claims the new British No. 1's rise was aided by cronyism. The 22-year-old, who won his first ATP singles title this week, is the son of multi-millionaire and former Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) CEO Roger Draper.
Draper Jr defeated Matteo Berrettini to win the Stuttgart Open last week. His triumph has elevated him to number 31 in the world, making him the top-ranked British player. He has followed this up by beating Carlos Alcaraz in Queens and is in the best form of his career heading into Wimbledon.
But a tennis blogger and fan named Pavvy G has claimed the Sutton-born star had a big helping hand in reaching the position, a suggestion that has sparked a row with Broady. Pavvy G accused the LTA of not supporting young tennis players who did not have the same resources as Draper.
Pavvy G wrote on social media platform they did not have the funding or support to continue. This is where the LTA has really failed.
The post caught the attention of British tennis star Broady, who refuted claims that others were more talented than Draper.
He argued: “Who were the kids who were more talented than Jack growing up? As far as I know, Jack was one of the very best in his age group from a young age. This tweet doesn't sit right with me because he can't help it. ” his father has done that, works harder than anyone and is incredibly humble.
Pavvy G doubled down and continued to blame the LTA for letting talented, low-income players slip out of the system. He told Broady: “I can almost guarantee I speak to more GB tennis players than him [sic].
I can also tell you that the LTA has mismanaged the funds and has allowed many talented players from low-income families to leave the sport.
Broady replied: “I'm not sure about this Pavvy as I'm a player representative for the British men this year. I also train at the National Tennis Center. By the way, I don't disagree at all with the point of including low-income players in the make sense, but it is not right to use Jack to make the point.
After beating Alcaraz, Draper insisted he had worked hard for years. He said: Although it has come about in the last two weeks, this is not something overnight.
This has been going on for years. So I'm really happy with how things have come together over the last few weeks, as you said, especially this time on the grass in front of the home crowd, and hopefully I can continue this momentum and keep building.
