Tennis star John Millman reveals Roger Federer's bizarre choice during his tour meal

With Wimbledon just two weeks away, one of the greatest players of all time has given the world an insight into the mind of a champion.

Roger Federer addressed the graduating class at an American university, where he reminded them that he also has the gift of gab.

He retired in 2022, so he no longer has his racket to speak.

But just as he had crowds hanging on his every word around the world, students at Dartmouth University hung on his every word.

“Like you, I have completed one big thing and am moving on to the next,” Federer told the graduates.

“Like you, I'm trying to figure out what that is, graduates. I feel your pain. I know what it's like when people keep asking what your plan is for the rest of your life.”

Dressed in his college graduation robes, the 42-year-old certainly looked and sounded good, even if he didn't feel like it.

“Really, you have no idea how excited I am. Keep in mind, this is literally only the second time I've ever stepped foot on a college campus, second time ever,” he said.

With 20 majors to his name, outside of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, few had Federer's benchmark.

However, the elite includes the Australian John Millman.

“It was a highlight of my career, I think it always is when you play against one of these all-time greats, and Roger is an all-time great,” Millman said.

“It was incredible for me to beat him on the biggest stages.”

Millman would end his career with a 1-3 head-to-head record with Federer.

His admiration for the man he defeated that night in New York was memorable.

So did the multimillionaire's modest food choices during the tour.

“I remember being with him in Zurich, and after our match, after training, we went to the clubhouse to eat,” Millman recalls.

“I'm thinking 'what's Roger Federer eating?' and I'm thinking of a filet mignon, you know, a nice steak.

“No, he had his sausage salad, which is chopped spam with a little salad dressing, and he was as happy as anything.”

Federer's modesty remains one of the most admirable traits of his character – and extends to the court as well.

“Most of the time it's not about having a gift, it's about having courage,” Federer said.

“In tennis, a great forehand with sick racket head speed can be called a talent, but in tennis, as in life, discipline is also a talent, and so is patience.

“Trusting yourself is a talent.”
