Nigeria zooms into the men's doubles final as WTT candidate Lagos ends today
Nigerian table tennis players Omotayo Olajide and Azeez Solanke have qualified for the finals of the ongoing World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Lagos in the men's doubles category, marking the country's first appearance in the finals of the tournament.
The five-day international tournament that ends today has witnessed thrilling ping-pong matches by players from home and abroad and thrilling spectators at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.
The tournament will culminate today as the winners will be determined in the men's and women's singles and men's and women's doubles categories.
South Korea has already emerged victorious in the mixed doubles category after the duo of Lim Jonghoon and Shin Yubin defeated Xu Huiyao and Luo Jiecheng 3-0 yesterday.
Today, Nigeria is on the brink of clinching a gold medal as Omotayo Olajide and Azeez Solanke take on India's Manav Vikash and Harmeet Desai in the men's doubles final.
The duo defeated Chinese pair FEI Junhang and LUO Jiecheng in the men's doubles semi-final, marking the first appearance of a Nigerian duo in the final.
In the women's doubles final, it will be an all-India affair as Archana Girish and Sreeja Akula will take on Yashaswini Ghorpade and Diya Parag.
Besides Omotayo Olajide and Azeez Solanke who reached the final, Nigerians Kuti Matthew and Bello Fatimo reached the mixed doubles quarter-finals but were overpowered by Indian duo Thakkar Manav Vikash and Kamath Archana Girish to win 3-0 (11- 1). 4, 11-3, 12-10).
Earlier, in the men's singles category, Muiz Adegoke reached the round of 16 after beating Amadi Omeh 3-2 in the round of 32.
However, he kissed the exit door after losing 0-3 to Korean Lim Jonghoon in the quarter-finals.
