WTA lawn tournament: Pegula wins tennis final in Berlin
Jessica Pegula, fifth in the world rankings, won the strong tennis tournament in Berlin. The American defeated Russia's Anna Kalinskaya on Sunday 6:7 (0:7), 6:4, 7:6 (7:3) in the high-quality final of the WTA 500 tournament and thus secured her fifth individual title, the lawn classic at Wimbledon.
In the third set the 30-year-old was already 1:4 behind. She later fended off several match points and finally took her first chance to win after 2:38.
Pegula was not among the favorites at the event, but also benefited from the tasks of the title candidates. Both Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova and crowd favorite Ons Jabeur Grand SlamWinners Aryna Sabalenka and Jelena Rybakina were unable to complete their matches due to injuries.
